The Science of Elastiseconds (es)

You might be wondering: "If the sun always rises at exactly 06:00:00 DT and sets at exactly 06:00:00 NT, what happens to the length of time?"

The answer is simple: We introduce the Elastisecond (es)! SI can keep their atomic definition of the second (s) based on Cesium radiation; under Elastic Daylight Time, we use the elastisecond to bend time to nature.

Daytime Math: 06:00 to 05:59 DT (Diurnum Tempus)

During the day, we calculate exactly how much actual sunlight your specific location receives from solar sunrise to solar sunset.

  • Sunrise: Instant of sunrise is pegged at 06:00:00 DT.
  • Solar Noon: Highest solar elevation is pegged at 12:00:00 DT.
  • Summer Example: Suppose your location enjoys 14 hours of actual sunlight (50,400 SI seconds).
  • We allocate these 50,400 SI seconds across our 12 "DT" daytime hours (43,200 elastiseconds).
  • Each elastisecond takes 50,400 / 43,200 = 1.167 SI seconds (s). The daytime elastisecond stretches!
  • Daylight lasts until 05:59:59 DT (43,200 es total), transitioning smoothly to 06:00:00 NT at sunset.

Nighttime Math: 06:00 to 05:59 NT (Nocturnum Tempus)

At night, the inverse calculation occurs across the duration of darkness.

  • Sunset: Instant of sunset is pegged at 06:00:00 NT.
  • Solar Midnight: Nadir / middle of darkness is pegged at 12:00:00 NT.
  • Summer Example: If daylight was 14 hours, darkness lasts only 10 hours (36,000 SI seconds).
  • We fit these 36,000 SI seconds into our 12 "NT" nighttime hours (43,200 elastiseconds).
  • Each elastisecond takes 36,000 / 43,200 = 0.833 SI seconds (s). The nighttime elastisecond compresses!
  • Night lasts until 05:59:59 NT (43,200 es total), transitioning smoothly to 06:00:00 DT at sunrise.

⚖ Why AM & PM Were Abolished

Traditional clocks use Ante Meridiem (AM, "before midday") and Post Meridiem (PM, "after midday"). However, on artificial standard civil timezones, 12:00 PM almost never aligns with true solar noon, and 12:00 AM has no relationship to sunset or sunrise!

Under Elastic Daylight Time, we use authentic Latin solar designations:

  • DT — Diurnum Tempus (Day Time): Valid while the sun is above the horizon (06:00:00 DT to 05:59:59 DT).
  • NT — Nocturnum Tempus (Night Time): Valid while the sun is below the horizon (06:00:00 NT to 05:59:59 NT).

THE UNIVERSAL ELASTISECOND FORMULA

1 es = (Real Phase Duration in SI Seconds) / 43,200

Where 1 es is one elastisecond, and 43,200 is the exact count of elastiseconds in a 12-hour phase (12 × 60 × 60).

Mathematical Properties

Condition Day Length (SI) 1 Elastisecond (es) Equals Clock Phenomenon
Equinox (March 20 / Sept 22) Exactly 12.00 Hours 1.000 SI Second (s) Elastisecond matches SI second perfectly
Summer Solstice (Long Day) e.g. 15.00 Hours 1.250 SI Seconds (s) Daytime es stretches (+25% longer)
Winter Solstice (Short Day) e.g. 9.00 Hours 0.750 SI Seconds (s) Daytime es compresses (-25% shorter)

It makes complete sense when you don't overthink it! Time was originally measured by sundials where daylight was divided into 12 temporal hours. Elastic Daylight Time simply brings modern mathematical rigor to nature's original clock!
